Accountant – Banking, Portuguese speaker

Job Overview.

This is an interesting opportunity for a fluent Portuguese speaker with accounting experience in Investment Banking to work for an International Bank based out of Madrid.

The overall purpose of this role is to work as a hands-on accountant in managing the finances of the Portuguese Branch of the organization. The primary focus is on ensuring compliance with local regulatory reporting requirements, managing the general ledgers, overseeing associated processes, and handling branch returns.

Key responsibilities include:

• Reviewing and filing accurate financial information to regulatory and other authorities.
• Managing general ledgers, including executing controls, adjustments, reconciliation, and review to maintain integrity across all associated reporting.
• Coordinating intercompany and accounts payable activities for the branch.
• Responding to queries from regulators and tax authorities.
• Assessing changes in regulations and laws, ensuring compliance, and supporting responses.
• Engaging in project work and continual process optimization.

Qualifications and skills required for the role include:

• A university degree in Business Administration, with further education in economics and accounting preferred.
• Solid experience in Accounting within a bank or a top-tier accounting firm.
• Fluency in both Portuguese and English languages.
• Excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and a proactive work style with the ability to meet tight deadlines consistently.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset with a focus on controls.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills.
• Previous experience in a financial control or regulatory reporting function at a top-tier organization.
• Excellent knowledge of Portuguese and IFRS accounting standards, as well as regulatory and tax rules.
• Experience in financial and regulatory systems architecture, with familiarity with tools such as SAP and Excel.
• Proficiency in using various software/system packages, particularly SAP and Excel.
